Your goal

Keep the ball off your court and send it over the net. On day one, aim for a pass your teammate can receive rather than a powerful attack.

Key terms

Rally: play from a serve until the ball is dead. Receive: handling the incoming ball. Set: a pass positioned for an attack. Rotation: changing positions when your team regains service.

Key rules · official rules and app defaults

FIVB 6-player basics: return the ball with at most three team touches, excluding a block touch; the rally winner scores. The receiving team rotates clockwise when it gains service. App defaults: 6-player is best of five sets, with 25-point regular sets and a 15-point deciding set; 9-player is best of three, with 21-point regular sets and a 15-point decider. The detailed 9-player association rules were not verified. Do not apply 6-player rotation or libero rules to 9-player matches without checking.

Equipment and safety

Use indoor shoes and a suitable ball. Check padded net posts and a dry floor. Keep feet out from under the net and leave landing space. Stop if your fingers or ankles hurt.

Your first practice

Warm up, then practise a low ready position without a ball, close-range forearm passes and cooperative rallies over a low net. Learn to call your teammate and the ball direction before chasing a streak.

Your first match

Agree on 6-player or 9-player, positions, serving order and finishing score. Use easy serves in practice matches. Say the score and next server aloud after each rally.

Recording in the app and its limits

Choose 6-player or 9-player in match setup. Record the rally winner once and check the set and service state. A score-only match does not provide complete individual attack statistics.

Common beginner mistakes

Everyone chasing the ball: assign zones and calls first. Applying 6-player rules to 9-player: check the separate rules before playing. Recording a point twice: review the latest event and undo it.

Coach script · demonstration · check understanding

Explain: “Send the ball so the next person can receive it easily.” Demonstrate: show a flat forearm platform and gently extend the knees. Short practice: exchange forearm passes with a partner, then stop. Check: “How do we move when a 6-player team regains service?” Feedback: “Good direction. Try swinging your arms less next time.”
